Montecatini and the surrounding areas

In the heart of the Tuscan greenery, a stone’s throw away from the cities of art and the seaside.

The origins of the city are lost in the mist of time. It seems that already in the Etruscan period, the city was known and inhabited, certainly the first reliable historical information dates back to the Roman era, when it seems that Catiline actually chose the Montecatini Alto hill where to establish his encampment which was initially called Mons Catilinae and subsequently Montecatini.

A long tradition of well-being

The city has always revolved around the combination water/well-being. Set in this almost idyllic atmosphere with 480,000 m2 of urban and hilly parks with spectacular health spa bathing establishments that are veritable works of art as well as being a tradition of age-old hotel hospitality, Montecatini Terme is the ideal city where to spend your wellness holidays.

The attractions of Montecatini Terme

In the heart of the Tuscan greenery only a stone’s throw from all the main cities of art and from the seaside; this city offers many opportunities for recreation: 4 cinemas, 2 theatres, the hippodrome, café concert, piano bars, trendy clubs, dance music clubs, theatrical performances as well as a season of classical music from April to October.

Montecatini is a synonym of walking in the natural greenery of parks and hills, practising outdoor sports, the discovery of characteristic corners of the ancient hamlets that are scattered all over the surrounding area, so as to find a dimension of life on a human scale, where everything can easily be reached on foot without the need to take the car, where it is possible to rediscover your natural balance.

Then there are the new and ancient Spas thatact in concert to offer well-being that ranges from our thermal spas to the new-generation thermal well-being: the ancient dogmas blend with modernity, in order to re-discover the ancient roots of Roman Thermalism.

There are not only spas, we discover the surrounding areas

Perhaps the pleasantness of the wellness holiday as well as the extremely long history that indissolubly links Montecatini to its spas, pushes an aspect into the background which should rather be at the forefront: thanks to its favourable position as the focal point of the Tuscany of the North, from here it is possible to reach many cities of art and beautiful towns waiting to be discovered:

  • Pistoia, 15 minutes away
Our main town of the province, hosts valuable monuments and buildings of interest such as the Cattedrale di San Zeno (Cathedral of St. Zeno), the Palazzo dei Vescovi (Bishops’ Palace) and the Battistero di San Giovanni (St. John’s Baptistry).
  • Lucca and Collodi, 20 minutes away
Lucca will surprise you with its beautiful city walls that are still intact. It is marvellous to stroll along the perimeter of the walls, just as it is to visit the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (The amphitheatre square). One can discover a torn that is on a human scale, where time seems to have stopped. Also Collodi can be reached 20 minutes from the hotel, Carlo Lorenzini’s birthplace, the author of Pinocchio. The town has dedicated a beautiful theme park to this famous puppet.
  • Vinci, the birthplace of the great Leonardo, 25 minutes away
Everyone knows of the fame and genius of the great Leonardo Da Vinci. His birthplace is only 20 km from the Hotel Parma e Oriente, therefore it could prove to be a convenient destination for a suggestive trip. Apart from the house where Leonardo was born and the Leonardian Museum, also the excellent wine cellars present in the town must be appreciated.
  • Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, 40 minutes away
The Duomo (Florence Cathedral) with its Dome created by Brunelleschi, the  Corridoio Vasariano (Vasari Corridor), the  Uffizi Gallery, the Battistero di San Giovanni (St. John’s Baptistry), Piazza della Signoria andthe Boboli Gardens. The Cradle of the Italian Renaissance, admired worldwide, can be reached only 40 minutes from here.
  • Pisa and its Leaning Tower, 40 minutes away
The Leaning Tower of Pisa that is situated in Piazza dei Miracoli, is one of the most famous monuments worldwide, one of the symbols of Tuscany itself. Also the medieval part of the city and the walks along the river Arno must not be missed.
  • Siena and San Gimignano, 1 hour and 20 minutes away
Enthusiasts of medieval Tuscan architecture really go into raptures here. San Gimignano is also called the Medieval Manhattan due to its many towers that standout against the skyline, that instil the town a fairy-tale environment. Just a little further away, Siena can be reached that we believe doesn’t really need much description. After all, we are speaking of two World Heritage Sites.

Also the Garfagnana territory deserves a special mention, the northernmost region of Tuscany. This is an anthology of medieval hamlets and characteristic villages.
The Hotel Parma e Oriente is happy to put adequate information material at the disposal of its guests so as to be able to organise trips around these attractions.
